Accountants play their part in the FMCG market

As a number of fast moving consumer good producers and retailers continue to report good profits, it’s not surprising that there are opportunities for accounting and finance professionals in the sector. It’s those with financial planning experience who are the most in demand; a trend that is set to continue given the increasing need for finance to provide forward-looking information.

Marketing and sales teams’ product and consumer research will naturally shape future business decisions. However what’s invaluable to businesses in this economic climate is understanding the financial impact new and existing product lines could have on the business, making financial planning skills an essential.

Financial planning skills are essential for FMCG employers.

As a result we are seeing employers look for commercially minded accountants with strong communications and influencing skills who can work closely with the business to ensure the business makes sound financial decisions; reflecting the findings of our 2009 workplace study: Balancing Act: Is the accounting and finance profession ready to step up?

However attracting the best talent isn’t always easy for some of the well known brands and many can’t afford to sit on their laurels. In fact one large Midlands based confectioner is conducting research on how their brand is perceived by potential applicants to ensure they have the finger on the ‘future employee’s’ pulse. Competition for talent is also on the increase as we start to see a number of Group brands, who have been relatively unknown in comparison to its product brands begin to increase its profile and review how it attracts talent. The HQ location can also be a factor in attracting fresh talent through its doors as many offices are based outside of key cities.

For accountants looking to get into or advance their career in the FMCG sector, evidence of commercial acumen, strong communications and influencing skills along with financial planning will make you stand out from the competition. If you have a background in the media or retail sector you will certainly be at an advantage and be flexible about where you want to work as not all opportunities will necessarily be on your doorstep.

FMCG companies provide excellent career development opportunities for accountants that are willing to get involved in the business and wish to make a difference. FMCG companies offer accountants exposure to manufacturing, sales & marketing, logistics, global sourcing, in addition to working with the state of the art IT ERP systems – all under one roof!!!
