Deck the halls with boughs of holly… festive season is here, and that can only mean one thing. The office Christmas party!
If you work in a professional environment, then the Christmas party needs to be navigated carefully. For those of us working in legal jobs or finance jobs, Christmas parties are a good chance to network and talk with the powers that be. These can be career-enhancing conversations, but of course you need to ensure that you are not embarrassingly drunk in order to facilitate these.
Here is the first rule of the office Christmas party. Have a couple of drinks if you feel like it, but stop before you get tipsy. Drink loosens the tongue and you do not want to end up saying the wrong thing to somebody who you might want to impress. Similarly, you do not want to be remembered as the person who got so drunk at the Christmas party that they passed out on the floor, or did that horrendous dance in the middle of the room.
Instead, use the opportunity to network. Be charm itself and work the room. Don’t just stick to speaking with your team. Instead, mingle confidently. Don’t spend too long with any one person, but be sure to make your presence known and to wish everybody a wonderful Christmas. That’s a good way to make a positive and lasting impression.
