Many small businesses, including those that offer accountancy jobs, fear losing staff they have spent time and money training.
That is according to Sylvia Constantine, the IBA Start up Business Advisor of the Year 2005, said that the risk of employees undertaking training and then leaving was a bigger risk for smaller enterprises.
She also said: "The problem is that one employee when you are a small business, is a larger proportion when compared to large businesses – it has a much bigger impact.
"In smaller businesses … the fear of people leaving, is a very real concern."
Ms Constantine made her comments after it was revealed that new legislation will allow employees the right to request time off to train.
Currently, this only stands for companies with more than 250 employees. The rule will be extended to smaller firms from April 2011.
