Service sectors seeing ‘modest’ wage increases

An accountancy salary survey could show that typical wages in the finance sector are rising after research indicated that fewer employers are freezing pay.

A new analysis of pay settlements by IDSPay.co.uk indicated that the private sector is witnessing increased stability in terms of wages, with the proportion of higher end deals said to be increasing.

Just eight per cent of service businesses are estimated to have had a wage freeze in effect during the three months to July 2010, comparing favourably to a proportion of 15 per cent across the wider economy.

Ken Mulkearn, editor of the report, said that basic pay is increasing, albeit by modest amounts.

"But the recovery in the business outlook and higher inflation are combining to place a certain amount of upward pressure on private sector awards," he explained

"These are the main factors behind the growth in the proportion of higher-end settlements and the continued drop in the proportion of freezes."
