Workers could require help of people in finance jobs as research shows pension problems

Workers could require the help of people in finance jobs after new research revealed that more than one in five are turning down "free money" with their pensions.

Zurich's research into company pensions revealed that 22 per cent of people working for firms that provide them are taking them up, while 14 per cent are not aware of them.

Additionally, the company found that eight per cent of workers are not sure whether or not they are enrolled in the scheme.

Zurich's UK head of corporate pensions Simon Foster said that most people would not be able to afford living comfortably in retirement "without careful financial planning".

"It seems that people don't understand the real benefits of having a workplace pension. Firstly it's a tax efficient way of saving, and secondly it's a way of getting free money from your employer who, in most cases, puts money into the pension for you," he added.

It comes after Capita announced recently that it is looking to expand its life and pensions division in Belfast because of an expected rise in demand for its services.
