Are quangos prepared for rising attrition rates?

The debate around the future of some quangos continues, creating uncertainty for current employees. However whatever the outcome, employers might want to take heed.

With an election looming, the role of a number of quangos is under scrutiny

In recent years the trend to devolve administration of many departments to quangos has increased, giving them considerable power and influence to carry out certain aspects of government policy. With an election looming, the role of a number of quangos is under scrutiny: What is its remit? Is it sufficiently accountable for its actions? Has it added value to the objective of the government department? Is it an efficient use of public money? Can the role be undertaken by another organisation?

Such uncertainty has meant that we have seen a huge influx of quango employees from a wide range of departments register their interest for alternative employment this year alone. A trend we expect to continue as employees, who could face tough questions this year, keep an ear to the ground on the employment market. We also expect to see agile employers wishing to capitalise on the situation take easy pickings of the top talent.

Although no one knows what the futures holds, quango employers need to take heed and look at how they are engaging and retaining their current employees as even for those departments that are disbanded, it won’t happen over night.
