Poor employee engagement could be indicative of far more serious problems, employers have been warned.
People in positions of seniority have been advised to look out for staff who regularly turn up late for work as they may have a drink or drugs problem.
That is according to Acas, an organisation that aims to improve working life though better employment relations, which says that poor timekeeping could be a sign of underlying troubles.
Gill Trevelyan, head of good practices at Acas, said that while drinking was an accepted part of social life, managers needed to remain aware of the difference between one-off and repeat offences.
She said: "Employees with a drink or drugs problem are likely to have higher absence levels than their colleagues. A manager should focus on how an employee’s addiction is affecting their performance and how they can get to the root of the problem."
According to figures from Drinkaware, more than half a million people turn up to work with a hangover each day.
