Young adults looking for their first jobs have been advised to expand their horizons beyond graduate recruitment schemes and look at the wider jobs market.
Recruitment agencies can match bright young professionals to a number of attractive positions that require a degree, even if they are not actually graduate schemes.
Dan Hawes, co-founder of the Graduation Recruitment Bureau, said that there are thousands of recruiters looking for young adults who won't be put on a fast-track management programme.
"Say Microsoft have no trouble getting IT graduates for their scheme, they will require the odd graduate for back office things like financing, HR and logistics – and these jobs don't get widely advertised," he explained.
"Recruiters struggle to fill them because of that, because graduates aren't aware of them."
Mr Hawes was speaking after research by the Association of Investment Companies indicated that 32 per cent of adults with debts from their time at university would prioritise a higher paying job over their long-term career aspirations to help clear them.
