Interns impacting on HR jobs?

Interns could be having an impact on the availability of work,
including HR jobs vacancies.

People who undertake internships in a bid to gain sector
experience could be reducing the overall number of fulltime posts
available within the industry.

Johnny Rich, publisher of realworldmagazine.com, said that it
was quite often the case that people adopting the impermanent post
could be directly taking the place of a paid employee.

He said: “A lot of interns doing work are actually taking the
place of a paid employee and are not getting much out in
return.”

Mr Rich went on say that in many cases the internship was not
only damaging for those looking for fulltime work, but also those
undertaking the temporary position.

He suggested that unless people are being paid or learning new
skills, they are simply being “exploited”.

Mr Rich made his comments after research from the Chartered
Institute of Personnel and Development called for a minimum wage to
be implemented for interns.
