HR departments advised over workplace stress

Business meetingEmployers and those in HR jobs have been advised to boost employee engagement efforts in order to reduce stress and fatigue in the workplace.

The advice comes on the back of fresh research which has found that around one in four people in the UK works right through the day, with no breaks, on a regular basis.

Of those polled by the Chartered Society of Physiotherapists (CSP) who admitted to skipping lunch, half said that they didn’t take a break midway through the day as they have too much work to do, while one in three cited staff shortages as the main reason.

At the same time, the research also found that four in ten British workers feel stressed at least once a week, though a significant proportion still go to work even when feeling mentally or physically unwell.

Commenting, CSP chairman Ann Green explained that enhancing employee engagement and ensuring all is well in the workplace can benefit both employers and their staff.

"Work is good for us and can contribute to our physical and mental well-being – but not when overworking means people don’t have the time or energy to look after their own health or when staff are at work but not fit for work," she said.

Meanwhile, the TUC has called on employers to offer their staff flexible hours so that they can enjoy the World Cup.
