Unsuitable people given leadership roles in HR jobs?

Unsuitable people, including those in HR jobs, could be acquiring management posts as a result of a lack of vision from senior members of staff.

That is according to the Impact Factory, a presentation skills, leadership development and communication training company, which states that the absence of forethought is resulting in the wrong people being promoted.

Tina Lamb, senior partner at the Impact Factory, said that companies often simply offered promotions to people within the company without thinking about the addition al management skills they will require.

She said: “Often what happens is people show great capabilities with certain aspects of their work and off the back of this they get promoted.

“People forget that with most types of promotions you need the skills needed for the people side of things – that aren’t to do with the actual business.”

Research from the Chartered Management Institute reveals that 68 per cent of UK managers categorise themselves as ‘accidental’ managers.
