Discrimination suffered by learning disabled people looking for work, including HR jobs, is a “real issue”.
That is according to jewellery magnate and friend of the late Princess Diana, Rosa Monckton, who states that employment-based discrimination towards the learning disabled is rife.
She said: “Whether you are learning disabled or not, you want to be able to fulfil your own potential, whatever that may be.
“Very often it is very difficult for them to even get to an interview stage because of the discrimination about their disability precedes them. I think that is a real issue.”
Ms Monckton, who has a daughter with Down’s Syndrome, said that children should learn from a young age to accept others with disabilities.
She suggests that this would create a society of adults that can better deal with “having a disabled person in [their] midst”.
Research from Turning Point reveals that 90 per cent of people believe individuals with learning disabilities still experience discrimination.
