HR jobs to entail a greater focus on pension schemes from 2012

An increasing focus could be placed on pension schemes for those looking to get into HR jobs, thanks to changes due to impact on the workforce from 2012.

According to the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), more than half (56 per cent) of businesses and two-thirds (64 per cent) of eligible staff support proposals for automatic enrolment in workplace pension schemes from 2012.

Such a move would make pensions a much larger administrative task for HR professionals and accountants working in payroll to deal with.

However, the government believes that the move will encourage more people to save at a time when an estimated seven million are failing to properly prepare for their retirements, with the number enrolled in private pension schemes having fallen by 2.5 million since 1995.

Lord Freud, DWP minister, said that the planned reforms will prevent many from facing hard financial times during their retirements.

"It is encouraging that, despite the recession, the majority of employers are still in favour of pension savings," he added.

"We will work with business and the industry to make automatic enrolment work, so we can give millions more people the chance to save, and an independent review team is currently looking at how we get the details right.”
