Morrisons has announced it will try and develop its online shopping department in the coming year in a move that could create IT jobs.
The supermarket's sales in the first half of 2010 increased by nine per cent to £8.1 billion, but as the market gets tougher, Morrisons may be looking at online shopping as another income stream.
Dalton Philips, the company's chief executive, told the Financial Times that any supermarket that does not have internet shopping facilities will struggle to remain afloat.
"If you can't make money online, you will end up subsidising that business and charging your core customers more," he told the news provider.
"I don't want to go into a business that does not add value for our customers. It has got to be profitable."
Earlier this week, a report by the Royal Mail and Snow Valley found that UK's online retailers are failing to provide adequate delivery options.
