IT jobs could follow as half of firms admit to not having a rigid policy on software updates

More half of all companies do not have a rigid policy regarding the installation of critical software updates, according to a new survey that could lead to more people in IT jobs.

GFI Software also found in its research that half of businesses have suffered at least one business critical IT failure because of installing a bad software patch.

Furthermore, a quarter of all respondents have suffered multiple IT failures because of buggy patches or compatibility issues, suggesting there could be a lack of highly-skilled technicians in the sector.

Cristian Florian, product manager at GFI Software, said that this shows companies must ensure that they test patches before deploying them.

"Patch management solutions help keep the balance between maintaining productivity – testing patches to make sure they do not interfere with the business environment – and applying security patches in a timely fashion to avoid compromising security," he said.

Research published by YouGov earlier this month revealed that more than half of UK workers are struggling to find documents on their work computers.
