The temporary immigration cap implemented until the end of the year could serve to benefit existing UK residents looking for work, including IT jobs.
Home secretary Theresa May revealed that the number of non-European Union workers allowed into the UK would be limited until April next year.
The cap may well be welcomed by people currently looking for work as they will likely face less competition for job vacancies.
Ms May revealed that a temporary limit had been put in place to ensure there was not a rush of applications.
She went on to say that the government’s stance had not been adopted in a bid to stop migration to the UK, simply to control it.
She said: "This government believes that Britain can benefit from migration, but not uncontrolled migration.
"I recognise the importance of attracting the brightest and the best to ensure strong economic growth, but unlimited migration places unacceptable pressure on public services."
