Jobseekers, including those looking for legal jobs, could find learning particular languages gives them a competitive edge.
According to the Confederation of British Industry, European languages are said to be the most sought after at this moment in time, with French and German most likely to grab the attention of prospective employers.
However, while these two languages may currently be the most useful, the likelihood that this will one day change is not being overlooked by the government.
Teresa Tinsley, director of communications at CILT, the National Centre for Languages, said that people were being encouraged to learn alternative tongues.
She said: “From the point of view of getting a job, it’s clear that some languages are more sought after than others – French and German in particular – but the government doesn’t want to look at just existing markets, it wants to look at opening new markets.”
Ms Tinsley added that experience abroad is “really, really valuable”.
