Legal practice jobs to see CFA consultation take place

A consultation on conditional fee agreements is likely to interest those in legal practice jobs.

Conditional free agreements (CFAs) are to be the central focus of an upcoming government consultation.

Those in legal practice jobs are likely to be interested in the outcome, given that such arrangements often help make services available to a range of people.

However, parliamentary under-secretary of state for justice Jonathan Djanogly – who is also the Conservative MP for Huntington – recently told ministers that the “high costs” of CFAs have become a concern, especially when they are used in defamation proceedings or clinical negligence cases against the NHS’s Litigation Authority.

“Significant changes” to the CFA system have been proposed in a recent report, including a ten per cent increase in the level of personal injury general damages, defamation and tort claims.

The consultation will also cover related recommendations, such as if lawyers should be able to make damages-based agreements in litigation.

“[It] will take account of any relevant legal aid reform proposals on which we will also be seeking views in the autumn,” Mr Djanogly added.
