Formalising flexible working in marketing jobs is ‘unnecessary’

Formalising flexible working with legislation is a step too far, including for people in marketing jobs.

The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) has insisted that formalising the flexible working relationship between employer and employee by drawing up legislation is beyond what is needed.

Andrew Cave, head of policy at the FSB, said that while increasing numbers of businesses were becoming aware of the benefits of flexible working, government involvement was nothing but counter-productive.

He said: “Something such as flexible working is so obvious to the vast majority of businesses it’s a good thing.

“[But] the state coming in and interfering by coming in between the employee and employer and formalising that relationship – that changes the dynamic totally.”

A survey conducted by Credant Technologies revealed that 39 per cent of employees believe their bosses expect to be able to contact them while they are on holiday.
