Firms with marketing jobs need to up performance management

Many UK companies, including those with marketing jobs, need to improve their performance management.

That is according to the Institute of Employment Studies (IES), which reveals that a number of businesses “don’t do performance management very well”.

Firms could find they struggle with how to appropriately deal with underperforming older employees, who they would have once simply accommodated until they reached retirement.

Since the government announced the abolition of the default retirement age however, this practice has instantly become unworkable and better performance management key.

Helen Barnes, principal research fellow at the IES, said that companies had grown accustomed to ageing problem employees simply running out their time.

She said: “Historically, if they’ve had someone whose performance hasn’t been that great but who has been there a long time and was coming up to retirement, they have retired out their problems.”

Confusion is still rife among businesses with regards to whether they will be able to force employees into retirement or not, according to human resources firm Croner.
