Social media training should be given to those in communications jobs

Social media training should be given to employees, including those in communications jobs.

That is the opinion of Rik Ferguson, solutions architect at Trend Micro, who believes the fact that people use social media within the workplace as well as in their own time, means they should be given proper training on how best to use it.

He said: “You need to offer education and training to your employees because they are going to use social media outside the workplace as well as within it.”

Mr Ferguson suggested that organisations that failed to adequately train their staff on how best to use social media were “lagging behind” the rest of the business world.

He made his comments after research from Tamar found that since the end of 2009 almost 50 per cent of young internet users use real-time search integrated results from social networks.

It was added that training should be lots of small sessions, rather than just once a year.
