Women workers, including those in communications jobs, are still a ‘long way off’ from seeing the gender pay gap significantly reduced.
That is according to the Trades Union Congress (TUC), which says that while there have been developments in past decades, there is still a great way to go.
A TUC spokeswoman said that the only way pay equality would be realised was if the “veil of secrecy” was lifted from around issues such as wages, the valuation of part-time work and the importance of jobs traditionally held by females.
She added: “Although around three in ten women earn more than their partners, which shows that progress has been made over the last 40 years, we are still a long way off closing the gender pay gap.”
Her comments follow research commissioned by Grazia Magazine, entitled the Women and Work Survey 2010, which revealed that less than 50 per cent of women earn either more or as much as their partners.
