Communications jobs bosses should ‘lead by example’ and relax

Company bosses, including those who manage people in communications jobs, should ensure that they set an example with regards to switching off.

That is according to the Chartered Institute for Personnel and Development (CIPD), which suggests that if bosses make sure they relax when they are out of the office, their workforce is more inclined to do the same.

Ben Willmott, senior public policy advisor for the CIPD, said: “As a manager, you should be leading by example and getting out the office when you can, taking a break of some shape or form, and encouraging your staff to take a break as well.”

He went on to say that if employees were found to be sending work emails very late at night or on the weekend, their manager should tell them that while they admire the commitment, it is important for them to unwind.

Mr Willmott made his comments after research from the Institute of Leadership and Management found that more than a third of managers work while on annual leave.
