Scrapping the default retirement age (DRA) will hopefully give people greater choice over their working life, the government said today (July 29th).
People in communications jobs are likely to have endured a changing career landscape against the difficult economic backdrop of the past few years – and therefore this announcement could be very useful.
A consultation has been launched by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, which proposes a complete end to the DRA by October next year.
It has also suggested reviewing when the state pension age should go up to 66, as well as strengthening the link between the basic state pension and earnings.
There could be a skills surge if people stay in work longer, added employment relations minister Edward Davey.
“Older workers bring with them a wealth of talent and experience as employees and entrepreneurs. They have a vital contribution to make to our economic recovery and long term prosperity,” he said.
