Recruitment agencies could soon help the National Health Service (NHS) source doctors, with the UK facing a shortage of junior doctors.
With the take-up rate for junior doctors lower than desired numbers, the NHS is understood to be considering employing from overseas in order to bolster the shortfall expected this August, according to the BBC.
The UK has become a less attractive place to work for overseas doctors for two main reasons – stricter British immigration policies and new European regulations regarding working hours.
Professor Derek Gallen, postgraduate dean of medical training for Wales, said that the recruitment shortfall was a situation that had been waiting to happen for several years.
He told the news provider: “We pulled the plug on overseas recruitment far too quickly. [We didn't] realise what the implications of that action would be two, three or four years down the line.”
Mr Gallen went on to say that the increased feminisation of the medical workforce also made staffing rotas “very difficult”.
