Who’s in demand – August 2010

While major changes are planned in the NHS, the majority have been put on hold until the evaluation of the Government’s White Paper when we predict we will see budgets channelled into service redesign and projects. At the moment the NHS needs contractors who can manage substantive posts while senior staff are moved into projects to manage the impending mergers.

Fixed term contracts were flavour of the month for NHS trusts with information analysts and data migration experts top of the demand list in IT but the election period dampened demand for temporary recruitment. We anticipate that there will be a need for network and server engineers as a result of budgetary control being passed to GP consortia and a restructure of the Department of Health.

With the NHS’s quest to cut costs and get value for money from its supply chains we’re seeing rising demand for commissioning, procurement and finance skills across all role types.

As GPs begin to play more of a lead role in the commissioning of services, and although this change programme is still in its infancy, we are already seeing demand for business managers and practice managers to manage external relationships and enable GP consortia to “compete” in what is now a stimulated market.

The NHS has been top heavy for many years and from my experience this needs to be resolved. I have been voiciferous on a few occasions about this to my fault but it does ring true. Unfortunately there are not many ‘business aware people’ at the top and as such it often works on who screams loudest wins.

It also appears that the ‘Friends’ leagues do not always listen enough to what is required they prefer the wouldn’t it be good attitude. Hence there are £ms of pounds worth of equipment across the country bouight by the genorous fundraisers but no space to install it.
