More procurement jobs could be created in the UK as a result of the government's decision to refocus public spending on areas that will deliver long-term economic success.
Chancellor George Osborne said in a speech at the London headquarters of the Bloomberg news agency that the UK has reason to be "cautiously optimistic" about the economic outlook, even though recovery will remain "choppy" for some time.
"We are shaping the economy of the future by promoting a pro-growth agenda," he said. "We are shaping the big society of the future by decentralising power and empowering people."
The chancellor also said that government departments would be willing to bring in "external expertise" to cut down inefficiency if necessary, which could open up new opportunities for professionals in the procurement industry.
"We will refocus public spending in those areas that will make a difference to our long-term economic success," Mr Osborne concluded.
However, shadow chancellor Alistair Darling has criticised the government's policy on public spending, saying that removing too much money too quickly could "derail" the economic recovery.
