Procurement jobs will be vital to a sustained economic recovery, one of the UK's leading businessmen has claimed.
Retail giant Sir Philip Green, who owns the Arcadia Group, has been asked by prime minister David Cameron to conduct an efficiency review of government spending that may create new opportunities for in the procurement sector.
Sir Philip will look at government departments' spending history from the past three years to ascertain where new approaches are needed.
Speaking to the Today programme on BBC Radio 4, he said: "They haven't even got a centralised procurement function. The just goes to show the type of opportunity [there is]."
Francis Maude, cabinet office minister, said that the tycoon's retail expertise will allow the government to make centralised savings rather than cutting back on frontline spending.
"We are extremely fortunate to have Sir Philip, with his immense commercial experience and of course his fantastic track record at managing large organisations."
The Arcadia Group's retail portfolio includes Burton, Dorothy Perkins, Miss Selfridge, Topshop, Topman and Evans, among others.
