Recruitment agencies could see an upturn in the number of green project management jobs available in Scotland and Ireland as a result of new government investment.
It is hoped that more than 5,000 green jobs will be created north of the border through the development of a number of offshore energy facilities to be built at key port locations in the next several years.
Announcing the new scheme, first minister Alex Salmond said that a total investment of £223 million would be needed from both private and public sources.
This money will contribute towards the construction of 11 offshore wind power component manufacturing sites that together are expected to create 5,1890 jobs and generate £294.5 million for the economy.
The new facilities will be created in what is the second stage of the National Renewables Infrastructure Plan launched by Scottish Enterprise and Highlands and Islands Enterprise.
Mr Salmond explained that Scotland is uniquely positioned to take advantage of renewable technology thanks to its abundance of natural resources and ambition to be a “global powerhouse” for clean energy.
“Scotland has established itself as a leader in green energy. Our seas have unrivalled potential to generate clean energy and bring jobs and investment to our communities,” he said.
“Scotland’s waters are estimated to have as much as a quarter of Europe’s potential offshore wind and tidal energy resource and a tenth of the wave power capacity, and in the current economic climate it is important that we capitalise on these natural assets to secure new opportunities that support economic recovery and growth.”
Meanwhile, the Irish government’s commitment to a €39 billion capital spending programme, expected to create some 300,000 private and public sector positions including programme management jobs, has been welcomed by various groups.
Both the Construction Industry Federation and Science Foundation Ireland welcomed the scheme, however opposition parties note that the figure represents a €14 billion reduction in spending that the government had promised between 2011 and 2013 under its original National Development Plan.
