Programme managers given advice on handling older managers

Younger candidates for programme management jobs may need to show that they are at ease dealing with older workers, as well as those who are their own age.

According to Harvard Business Review, an organisation's success depends on the ability of senior managers to hire people better than them, which will mean taking on older managers with more experience for young entrepreneurs in programme management positions.

In a blog piece on the website, Michael Fertik said that managing colleagues with ten to 15 more years of experience than yourself can pose "unusual challenges" in terms of motivation, boundary setting and leadership.

"Even more than with other colleagues, you should over-communicate your company vision, industry objectives, and company-wide targets," he recommended, stating that this should always be the primary focus.

"Senior managers, no matter their level of experience, will look to you as the leader to set and communicate the vision."

Mr Fertik also urged programme managers to take more of an active role in the methods and operating metrics used by those senior managers who are failing to perform, as this will likely spur them on in a bid to regain control of their day-to-day work.
