Civil service jobs cuts will 'reduce public services provision'

Cuts to civil service jobs will have a negative impact on the provision of public services.

That is the opinion of Duncan Brown, director of HR business development for the Institute for Employment Studies, who believes that the downsizing of the public sector workforce will only serve to damage public services.

He voiced his concerns after it was revealed that widespread redundancies could be implemented throughout the sector.

Mr Brown said: “The forecasts of redundancy seem to be going up and up. At the moment they seem to be saying ‘we’re laying off staff, we’re not going to hire in consultants, temps et cetera.’”

However, he went on to say that such extreme levels of job losses were unlikely as it would only lead to public discontent.

Indeed, Mr Brown suggests that widespread redundancies would be nothing short of “electoral suicide”.

Unemployment forecast documents were recently leaked to the Guardian, revealing the possibility of the public sector job cuts.
