Civil service jobs in Bristol could be put under the microscope following suggestions that the recruitment process for a particular post was “totally racist”.
Bristol City Council released an advertisement for an £18,000-a-year position specifying that white people were banned from applying.
The advert is not illegal under the Race Relations Act 1976, which relates to the underrepresentation of minorities in councils.
Currently, 12 per cent of Bristol residents are from minority backgrounds, while only seven per cent of the council are ethnic.
An unnamed white jobseeker said: “Being white I am excluded from applying for the post.
“Surely equal opportunities means giving everyone an equal chance to succeed rather than discriminating against people because of the colour of their skin?”
In 2008, Avon and Somerset Fire Service faced racism allegations when it tried to ban white people from attending recruitment days.
The service was purportedly trying to boost ethnic representation within the force.
